Healthy eating during hari raya

Hari Raya Aidilfitri marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Muslim communities all over the world celebrate this. Aidilfitri is also exciting as all our favourite traditional dishes such as rendang, lontong, ketupat and lemang are “in season”. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a symbol of harmony of family, friends, and the community, while the preparation of food along with family members strengthen relationships. However, it is also important to maintain a healthy diet to avoid overeating and health issues. Making smart choices on healthy foods is important to avoid overeating unhealthy foods. Many are also adjusting to the change in meal times as the fasting is over. Here are some tips on how to eat healthily during Hari Raya.

Healthy eating during hari raya

Indulge in moderation

Avoid taking a large amount of food in one go. You could have a few mini meals over time instead. One of the most important tips for healthy eating during Hari Raya Aidilfitri is to practise eating in moderation. It is important to remember that while the festive season is a time to celebrate and enjoy delicious food, it is just as important to avoid overindulging. By practising moderation, you can still enjoy the festive treats without overeating. We suggest you eat small portions of food and take time to savour each bite. This way you will not get full too soon and can go back for seconds without the risk of digestive discomfort!

Choose healthier options

When choosing what to eat as well as what to cook during Hari Raya, it would be best to choose healthy foods to eat like grilled meat, vegetables, and fresh fruits. These foods are rich in nutrients and can help you feel full and satisfied. Avoid fried or oily foods as they can be high in calories and unhealthy fats. You can still have that delicious rendang but it would be best to do so in small portions. Choose freshly cooked meals that are prepared with healthy cooking methods such as grilling or baking.
